Remember, persistence and practice are key to building confidence and credibility in your copywriting journey. There are a lot of things that make copywriting different—or at least, more specialized—than other kinds of writing, but I think the first thing that strikes people is how well copywriters are paid. (More on that in a bit!)It’s an awful truth that most writers don’t make much money. The vast majority of novelists need a day job to make ends meet and even journalists aren’t paid nearly as much as they should be.
Sales pages are the place to start getting into this category of copywriting, and while this isn’t rocket science, it’s definitely not easy or something that comes intuitively like blog writing. If you want to make money, you need to be able to use your persuasive writing skills to create specific types of copy that are in high demand. Entry level wages were really bad, and the supply of freelance copywriters was so much less than demand, that new copywriters were just waltzing into this field and doubling their income almost overnight.
And there are somewhere between 4 and 5 million new companies started every year! With many things in life, it’s not what you know, but who you know. It’s important to connect with other copywriters, businesses, instructors and anyone in the copywriting world to find out what’s working for them and how you can make it work for you. Join networking groups to meet others like you and use best practices to help you grow from a beginning copywriter to an expert.
It’s become something of a taboo, and it definitely hindered my growth in the early years. The second workaround is to pick a brand that you follow and write a deliverable they don’t currently have. This needs to be a brand where you feel like you deeply understand the brand’s goals, value, and audience — where you can answer those key copywriting questions yourself. The first workaround is to simply write a blog post. Blog posts are very straightforward and don’t really require insider information. In normal circumstances, you don’t answer these questions as the copywriter.
It’s all very neat and tidy compared to other businesses that tend to be a lot messier in this regard. I expect I’ll be a lot more specialised in a couple of years though. I’m bringing on a lot of overseas SaaS clients at the moment, so expect that momentum to keep moving in the right Copywriter job direction (fingers crossed). I think it was a case study for a firm called Tidy International – some project and inventory management software.
Now, I’ve started giving advice – and there’s nothing that turns me off helping someone quicker than getting excuses, or requests for an easier path. The internet is full of, ‘How can I get to where you are, without doing the things you did? But I think the reason that I get generous advice and leads from other people is that I do my best to take action – and do them justice. Some are a little dry and technical – but helpful for a certain audience. Very few have ever made me question my moral compass.
Then, pick a specialty that interests you, whether email copywriting, Facebook copywriting, or sales letter copywriting. It’s not really their faults because, historically, there hasn’t been a clear path for copywriters. You can’t major in it at any college that I’m aware of.
You can keep in touch with Diane on LinkedIn by sending her a message mentioning this article. You can also where you’ll learn more about programmer brand messaging and conversion copywriting. I started out working on website and landing page copy.
